Midterms did interrupt us a bit, but I'm not sure they are a good excuse for falling behind in these Critical Responses. Clicking around and looking at your blogs, my impressions range from impressed to unimpressed. Why did I force you start these blogs? Reasons:
- Debate at KMLA has widely been described as "an easy A" within the status quo. I want the status quo to call it a "rewarding A."
- Watching TED videos and writing about them afterwards has never led anyone to become less intelligent.
- Debate isn't just about arguing out loud. If your public speaking skills aren't the greatest, I'd like to give you opportunities to make up for that on paper.
- To improve as a writer, it is helpful to write freely and persuasively without thinking "this is an essay so I better make sure I have a thesis and MLA footnotes." Have some fun, and develop your style and voice without worrying about grammar.
- To improve as a speaker, it's nice to have a strong grasp of debate vocabulary. Use these responses as a forum for that.
- Debate is all about expressing opinion so people can hear it. A blog does the same thing and actually lasts a lot longer.
At the end of the semester, I will holistically examine your blogs, and that will be a measure of class participation - so please participate. It's not that hard. This weeks zeros should be a warning. Don't let them add up.
